The Da Vinci Code

Just received an email with an interesting link to some Singlish fun and Biblical truth. To review please click http://www.syfc.org.sg/events/dvc/cinema.html

I have recorded a documentary on the Da Vinci code from the Discovery Channel and will probably play it again once I have seen the movie. If you are interested to watch please let me know. We will try to organise a review session during the school holidays.

Journey of the Heart

That's the theme of the 15th CGMC family camp held in April, 2006. We must all thank Kon Seng for capturing the above event with a camera. Please review some of the pictures at http://www.cgmc.infoline.com.my/family_camp_2006.htm . As you can see all the participants were having real good learning and fun. That's the true spirit of CGMC. ONE BIG FAMILY. Can someone be kind enough to blog about the event for us who did not manage to attend? Thanks.

Instant Cyber-cafe

Hock Hin is a computer genius and a fast worker. He set up this cyber-cafe in my house within minutes. He carried all the equipment in several bags, filled the room with wires and soon we were surfing the net. Now I know how he remains in good shape despite his fantastic appetite!

Blogging cannot be any easier with all the high tech gear we have nowadays. So please continue blogging. It's a wonderful way to keep in touch and share our thoughts.

Testing

Finally got my right username which is "ongtithin". Just came back from our Chinese Congregation Parents' Day Celebration. The turnout was very good, approximately 180 and more than half were non-believer guests. Food, prepared by members, as usually was fantastic. Our Supervisor, Dr. Su, gave a lively and enlightening talk on how to keep healthy and fit. It was very well received by the audience. But I could received perhaps only 20% because he spoke in Mandarin.
I am a bit adventurous so I am also trying to attach a picture to this posting. It is a sunrise scene taken in Ipoh Garden South. It is one of my screensavers.
Grace and Peace.

I am amazed

I cannot believe my eyes when I performed a search on "Canning Garden Methodist Church" with the MSN search engine. We are listed as number 1 out of the 11255 listings. Phew that's awesome. I am encouraged and hope you are too. Lets make our blog work too especially with counselling. I have placed the metatags for all the webpages and will soon submit our website formally to major search engines.

Laugh and the whole world laughs with you.

Just discovered this fun filled website of Christian cartoon jokes. Try it out. Cartoons are free and I have copied 2 into our website. Trying to figure out how to change the cartoons automatically everyday. The URL is http://www.reverendfun.com/ .

Website now 90% complete

We have created a new look for our website. Hopefully the daily bible study notes will come out well everyday with a new topic. Most of the pages are complete with the essential details. Some pages however lack new photos. The addition of the family camp 2006 photos will be excellent. Hopefully we can get the approval of the Church leaders before our full scale launch in the cyberworld. To be seachable I need to place metatags for each of the webpages. I need more feedbacks for these projects. I am w-a-i-t-i-n-g !!

Fantastic Mother's Day

Yesterday was Mother's day and I never knew I can do so many things in a day. It was Sunday and so naturally I have to get up very early in the morning, see my patients in the hospitals and then arrive in Church before 8.15 am. (remember be in Church on time!) True enough, Pastor Ashok was at the entrance checking on punctuality besides giving all of us a warm welcome. It is always very nice to see Pastor with his broad smile.

All the mother's in Church were a happy lot. Why not? They all got a free towel! Truly it was a day to reflect on what our mothers have gone through bringing us up to be what we are today. We truly appreciate it but often enough we do not express it. So from today always say something nice to our mothers. If there is nothing good to say, just keep quiet rather than complain. This advice goes to me as well.

Dr. Su was good with his sermon on"How much to make the rest of your life the best of your life". He emphasised the importance of putting the Will of God first before all other considerations. And our need to live out His will.

Dr. Su loves to illustrate his points with Chinese proverbs. Ancient Chinese scholars were smart intellectuals. They recorded their thoughts and preserved them for generations. Dr. Su has a candid way of taking a person's weight. Oops, definitely not in his office I but only at one's home privately. Well, the way to assess whether one is overweight or obese is just simply to strip down and stand in front of a mirror. Then start jumping up and down. If you notice areas of floppy movements on the body where they should not then you have excess fat. Smart isn't it?

After service the Garden Terrace was filled with people enjoying a sumptious brunch. Mothers acknowledged our appreciation. All others acknowledged the good food. We shall have another round for Father's Day!!!!

Evening was spent with Dr. Hoe from KL who was on her way back from Sg. Petani. Still as charming as before but we couldn't wish her Happy Mother's Day. Well, well, well she is still unattached. Any suggestions?? Please email me.

Spent the rest of the free time in the evening with my boy playing badminton. Did a marathon session with our CG websiste at night. Guess what ?? I have completed the remaining webpages. Surprise! Surprise!! Please go to the website and find out more. www.cgmc.infoline.com.my One last bit to complete is the index page. I have just found an automatic daily update for bible lessons from a respectable site. Hope to put it up this week.

Being youthful 50 and beyond

Visited the Toy Museum in Penang over the weekend. This museum was featured in the newspapers a couple of weeks ago. It belongs to an engineer with a passion for toys. He has collected these toys over the years. Its really good but the entrance fee is rather expensive. Adults rm 10 and children rm 6. Will post more pictures next. Uploading pictures into blogger is very slow. Well we cannot be young anymore but at least be youthful and enjoy life. Cheers.

Day after the 7Km Run of the 2006 KL Marathon....

Reflections
Hmmmm....I survived the run. Not bad considering that I have not run for quite a long, long, long time...and all I managed was to put in some "practice" runs in the gym & around the office a week before that.
The Day
Got up at 5.20am as I needed to pick Josh's fren Keen Wai and then set off to pick Josh (he stayed overnight at his best fren's place). Discovered that the highway leading there was closed (for the full marathon) and we had to detour to Pantai before reaching Taman Desa. As we set off we discoverd we had not prepared properly....gosh we were hungry. Fortunately Josh's fren Foo Seng had some bananas......good source of energy.
The Race
Soon it was time to start off from Dataran Merdeka. Agghhh...too many people infront, just had to let the crowd run first and started a steady (old man talk) pace. Strangely stamina was not an issue (probably becos of the slow pace) but the tightness/pain around the left ankle and ahhemmm...the bladder gave some issues. Well, mind over matters....there will always be something that will not be right with the body when you run these races.
First milestone after Dataran Merdeka....Pudu Jail. Sweats, pain, burning heart, pumping lungs, a full bladder & NO finishing line in sight....but I must go on....loh behold I reached the Lot 10 junction. Still a long way to go....shall I stop or go on?!! I must continue (my surname is Hum, you know.....) and finally around Sheraton Hotel, Jalan Sultan Ismail (maybe with another 3 or only 2 km to finishing line) I had to walk to ease the pain. Walked briskly for 200 metres and started running again....strangely the pain went away. Smooth running after that and soon it was the turn to Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman....and loh....from far I see the tallest flagpole in the world (the most beautiful sight). I preservered and continued running, finished the race and survived.
The Reward
The reward.....nasi lemak with curry chicken and plenty of sambal with a hot cup of teh tarik with Josh and his frenz.

Josh, Yih Hon (Josh's best fren) & me after the race and before the
glorious nasi lemak!!

Hiking in Pat Sin Leng

We went hiking in the Pat Sin Leng Country Park today. It is called the Pat Sin Leng in Cantonese which is translated to the "Eight Immortals" because of the eigth peaks.

Although we all think that HK is a concrete jungle, this is not so. About 60% of the territories is park land and there are many trials. The Pat Sin Leng is part of the Wilson trial that stretches from HK island to the New Territories to the border with Shenzhen.

There is a surprise diversity of flora in the Pat Sin Leng Country Park. Some of these are shown on the right. To view pictures of Kam Kwi and me, visit my blog Posted by Picasa

HK Marathon 2006

Ran in the 10 km race at the HK Standard Chartered Marathon last Sunday 12/2/06. There were about 20,000 runners for the 10 km race in several groups. I ran in the Master group (used to be called the veteran for the oldies). It was quite an experience to run with so many people together - for mutual encouragement. I did a slow jog and finished in 1 hour 06 minutes. Luckily no injuries or mishap. Unfortunately 1 runner (of the full marathon) collapsed half way and died in hospital 2 days later.

My wife ask me why I took part in this 'hazardous' activity? I don't really know but it may have something to do with getting old? As Onn Keong said getting to 50 makes him want to do things faster; many more things to do. I suppose joining the race is same. I want to take on new challenges while I still can. It would nice to hear from others what challenges they have taken recently.

After all these years good frens still meet at Miners Arm

Gong Xi Fa Cai greetings from FeiChiew, WanHon, KeeKuang, FongFatt & FooWah.

Also taking this auspicious period to share some doggie lessons ......

(extract from Heart Talk by Yeoh Siew Hoon – an editor/contributor from The Inner Circle – Shangri La Golden Circle newsletter)
Never bite the hand that feeds you: A well-trained dog would never intentionally bite its owner. It may occasionally snap at those that would do you harm. In business, we should never talk bad about our employers while we're working for them and especially after we've left them. Such words have a way of coming back to bite you in your behind when you least expect it. Ditto with friends who give you love - don't talk bad about them behind their backs. Say it to their face if you feel strongly enough about it.
There are no bad dogs, only bad owners: Dogs reflect their owners' disposition. Angry owners make angry dogs. Happy owners make happy dogs. It's as simple as that. In the same way, there are no bad employees, only bad managers. There's a saying that goes, if you point the finger at someone, three fingers point back at you. Next time you're unhappy with someone for a reason, find three reasons how you could have contributed to the situation.
Live every moment: For a dog, there is no time like the present. NOW is what counts. Many self-help books, especially those on meditation, tell us to live the moment. Many of us say it, but truthfully, find it hard to live up to. Trapped as we are by the burdens of the past and the fear of the uncertainty of the future, we struggle to live in the now. Throw away those books, just observe dogs for a day. It's cheaper and, trust me, more fun.
Give unconditionally: Yes, yes, it's true that dogs do expect to be fed at the very least. But they do know the art of loving unconditionally. No matter what you do to them, they will remain loyal and faithful to you. Give without expecting anything in return. It's far more rewarding than calculating from the onset what you're going to get in return if you give. The pleasure comes from not expecting; the expected always disappoints.
Express yourself: Dogs do not hold back on expressing their feelings. They sulk when disciplined. They roll over shamelessly when they want their stomachs rubbed. They whine when they want something. They put their head on your lap when they want love and affection. They lick you when they want to say, "I love you too." We should learn to be equally expressive and spontaneous. Too often, we are afraid to express our feelings for fear of "what will others think of me". Truth is, most people are too self-absorbed to bother about other people anyway. We should say and do what we feel with those we care for. Make it easy for those who love us to love us.
Respect other species: Dogs may hate cats but they have a healthy respect for the felines. They may chase them but they know they could get their eyes scratched out if they are not careful. Similarly, we should have a healthy respect for other races and religions. We may not understand them but we should accept that they are part of our world. Just as dogs are. Next time you meet a dog, don't shriek, "Does it bite?". Instead, say hello and ask to shake its paw. Make friends with other species, not spurn them.
Play for your life: There is no sight more joyful than watching a dog run on the beach or across an open field. They bound with such abandon that it fills your heart with laughter. We should learn to play more. Have fun with our lives. Play in the sand. Run through an open field. Wallow in the mud. Stop at every tree to appreciate its beauty. Play with each other.

Never take a dump in your own backyard: A well-trained dog does not do its business in the house. My dog has the ability to choose the most remote and hardest-to-get-to spot, forcing me to wade through knee-high grass to clean up after him. He knows discretion is the better part of valour.

Creating CG16 cum CGMC Website

The Year 2006 has arrived and it is time to create our Cell Group cum CGMC website. The website URL is www.infoline.com.my/cgmc (under construction). This missing link from my original Breath Links website is vital for evangelism as it is the pointer to Spiritual Health besides the mental and physical health which I most commonly deal with. This website will heighten the interest of our viewers to the activities of the Canning Garden Methodist Church and the Christian faith. It will also provide links to various Christian resources available worldwide.

As for this blog I pray that our cell group members will provide more postings for our readers. There are so many things one can blog about: spiritual matters, hobbies, interesting local or worldwide news, book reviews, etc. Other cell groups members are welcomed to join us. They may also be enrolled as team members. Team members have the added advantage of posting articles in the blog besides just giving comments.

Wishing you a Happy and a Blessed New Year.

Guess the names of the Three Musketeers

This picture was taken in 2005 in Ipoh Swimming Club. Someone from afar has dropped by Ipoh to say "hello".

The previous picture I posted was that of Mr. Ng Peng Choon in my clinic. Did all of you get it correct?

Clinic Nurse Injured

Beware if you are a resident of Ipoh. I was told yesterday that there is a group of 3 Indian males who have been terrorising businesses in town. They will enter shops in broad daylight and slash anyone in sight to cause panic. Then they will ask the the shop owners to give them money which they are more than willing to give to avoid harm. That is their modus operandi.

And today I was told that a clinic in Ipoh Garden South was robbed by most probably the same gang. It happened at 8.30 am when the nurse was opening the clinic door. 3 Indian males jumped at her, got her inside the clinic, punched her and slashed her. Fortunately or unfortunately, the doctor was not inside otherwise he will also be slashed. The gang did not make off with much money and so they will be robbing again.

So be very careful wherever you are. Most of these news are not reported in the press. Arm yourseves with pepper sprays and the like or simply carry RM 5,000 with you everywhere to be given away freely!!

The Story of Ipoh from feet to flight

A group of heritage lovers from Ipoh has organized a major exhibition in the Ipoh Museum. The exhibition starts on the 16 Jan till 12 Feb 2006. It opens from 9.30 am to 5 pm daily. Admission is free. See you there.

This is the first exhibition by a group known as Ipoh World Sdn. Bhd. The person behind it is Commander (Rtd) Ian Anderson a British gentleman. He is an avid collector of tiny shoes worn by ladies who "bound their feet" to look beautiful and elegant. Please come to lend support and encouragement.

A surprise visit

I took this splendid picture today on Wai Hoong's request and he obliged. Now, can you all remember who he is? His name will be forthcoming in my next post. Think harder and I am sure you will get it right.

Today is a special day besides being the first day of school for our kids. I just spoke to dear Lim Kwan Wah. How better to serve our old school than to become the headmaster of ACS Primary School. His email address is lkwanwah@streamyx.com. Do drop him a line or two when you are free. I shall be inviting him to blog as well.

Let's start blogging

I finally got the energy to launch this blog for all of us young fellows. When one is going on 50's suddenly everything needs to be done at one go. This blog idea came sometime in October last year but then the lethargy.

I have already read several spiritual stories, some philosophical and others plain hilarious. It's really nice to read about how well all of you are doing. It will also be wonderful to know each other's family better for the other half of us is really inseparable from us all.

New Year's Day is always a time for reflection and quiet prayer. I always look back and count the numerous blessings I have received. As for the shortcomings, I always look at them, analyse them and make a wish never to repeat them. Then there are the whole lot of things which need to be done but never took off. Prayerfully there will be time this year.

Besides the usual day to day business of my clinical practice there is this desire to set up the Perak Chest Society. Hopefully it will become a reality this year since the idea was mooted in 2004. The main aim of the society is to help educate all those with chest diseases to help themselve. The main activities involve those with asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (smoker's lung), respiratory cripples, obstructive sleep apnea, lung cancer prevention and end of life issues.

As we have discussed earlier it may also be a good idea for us to think about an education fund for needy students. I would like your feedback and perhaps then we can get down to the size of the fund.

My family and I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all A HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Celebrating Christmas

Our cell group celebrated Christmas on the 23rd December, 2005. We had almost 50 people, including guests, attending the pot blessed dinner at my residence. We had a short re-enactment of the nativity scene by the children followed by singing of Christmas carols. Our cell group is known as CG 16 of the Canning Garden Mehtodist Church and I must admit we are truly blessed to have such a group of caring people. We have the very young and the very old and my son loves to meet them all. Our church embarked on cell group ministry some years back and the number of groups are getting larger.
