Alpha in the Workplace

To run an Alpha Course effectively, consider the following tips:

  1. Create a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere: The environment you create should be warm, open and supportive. Encourage participants to ask questions, share their thoughts and engage in discussions.
  2. Make the content accessible and relevant: The course should be designed in a way that is easy to understand, engaging and relevant to the participants’ lives. Consider incorporating personal stories, interactive exercises, and group discussions.
  3. Foster a sense of community: Alpha is not just about imparting knowledge, it's also about building relationships. Encourage participants to get to know one another, build relationships, and form a supportive community.
  4. Choose experienced leaders: The leaders of the course should be knowledgeable, experienced, and passionate about helping others understand the Christian faith. They should be able to facilitate discussions and answer questions in an approachable and compassionate manner.
  5. Promote a safe and respectful environment: Everyone should feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and opinions without fear of judgment. Encourage participants to listen to one another and respect different viewpoints.
  6. Offer opportunities for follow-up and growth: The Alpha Course should not end with the last session. Offer participants opportunities to continue growing in their faith and connecting with others, such as a small group or regular events.
  7. Remember, the goal of the Alpha Course is to create a space where people can explore the Christian faith in a non-threatening and supportive environment. By following these tips, you can help create an effective and meaningful experience for all participants.
May consider posting the videos online for review on demand.  Perhaps a system to track users. There are several ways you can post the videos for an Alpha Course:

  1. Online Video Platforms: You can use online video platforms such as YouTube, Vimeo or Wistia to upload and host your videos. This option is free and accessible, allowing you to easily share the videos with your participants.
  2. Course Websites: If you have a website for your Alpha Course, you can upload the videos directly to the site. This allows you to create a centralized location for all course materials and keep everything organized.
  3. Social Media: You can use social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram to share the videos with your participants. This option is a great way to reach a wider audience and engage with participants outside of the course.
  4. Video Conferencing Platforms: If you're unable to meet in person, you can use video conferencing platforms such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams to host live sessions and share the videos.

How to write a grant proposal

First requirement is to identify and develop a project that supports the core mission.

Questions to be answered:
  1. What do you want to do?
  2. How much will this cost?
  3. How long will it take?
  4. Who will benefit from this project and how?
  5. How does teh project fit within the mission of the organisation?
Prepare a good summary of the project followed by details.  Most people will just read the summary and decide whether to read on further.

Perak Chest Society will need a grant to purchase more oxgyen concentrators for loan.

The Ideal Volunteer

To recruit volunteers effectively and to ensure the volunteers have the necessary passion and dedication, it is critical to know what we exactly need. To do that we need to create a profile of an ideal volunteer.
List the organisation and its goals.
The ideal volunteer would be hard to come by. Play to people's strengths and actual abilities (rather than perceived strength).
Volunteer profile:bottom line
1. List all the characteristics one is looking for
2. Be specific
3. Match at least 2 of the characteristics
4. Play to people's strength
The mission needs to be very clear.

Urban Sketchers Ipoh opening speech

Salutations

Mr Chin Kok Yan - Chairman, organising committee, Urban Sketchers Ipoh

Mr Phang Chew and Mr Rene Enriquez – sketch artists who will be conducting the Workshops.

On behalf of the Board Members of YMCA Lahat Road, I wish to extend a warm welcome to everyone present here today.

Special Occasion

This is indeed a very special occasion and a great honour for me to be invited by Urban Sketchers Ipoh to launch their impressive Exhibition. Thank you. I must congratulate Mr Chin and his team for working so hard to put up this Exhibition. The sketches are very beautiful. These sketches will immortalise buildings and structures which may be torn down in future. The sketches will then remain as permanent records for our younger generations to appreciate.

Mr Chin will tell you much more about the Vision and Mission of Urban Sketchers Ipoh during his speech.

Today is also a very special day. It is Easter Sunday. Jesus Christ is alive today because he conquered death some 2000 odd years ago. He was nailed to a cross, died and raised from the dead again. He is alive today and remains faithful to His promise of eternal life.

15 Clarke Street

This building is named 15 Clarke Street. Leong Sin Nam built this row of shophouses. My parents and I used to stay at the corner shop after the Japanese Occupation. My early childhood was spent in this neighbourhood.

Upstairs we have the Leong Sin Nam Hall and the Leong Yeow Nyean Library.

Starting next year, every January, the Leong family will be organising the Leong Sin Nam Memorial Lecture and Exhibition. The Leong Sin Nam Exhibition will run for 2 weeks.

TO BE is the name of the registered company here.

YMCA Lahat Road will be conducting its activities here. Please get hold of a YMCA brochure before you leave. You can obtain up to date information from our website and do follow us in Twitter. We shall be starting the IMPACT and DISCOVER programmes next month. Please come and join us. You are encouraged to become YMCA members.

THIS SPACE AND THE HALL ABOVE ARE AVAILABLE FOR FREE TO ANY NGO OR CHARITABLE ORGANISATION WISHING TO HOLD EXHIITIONS TO SHOWCASE THEIR NOBLE CAUSES.

SJK Min Tet

In a short while I shall be inviting 3 top achievers from SJK Min Tet School to receive their prizes sponsored by the Leong Educare Trust. Next year onwards the prizes will be given away during the LSN Memorial Lecture. Leong Sin Nam founded the school in Falim and my father Leong Yeow Nyean was very supportive of its activities.

Thank you.

YMCA Board of Governance Meeting 2014

Arrived in KL by train on Friday 14th night. KL was very hazy and had no rain for several weeks.

YMCA KL was just a stone throw away from KL Sentral. However, I had to ask around for directions as the maps from the hand phone weren't good enough to guide me from the station. Stayed 2 nights in the YMCA and it brought back the nostalgic feelings.  I had stayed in this YMCA many times when I was a young doctor travelling to KL for conference.

The meeting was very useful for us who serve in non-profit boards.  The presentations by Ms Melissa were excellent.  She had a lot of experience in US.  The meetings went on for 2 days and l left KL on Sunday at 6 pm.

Remembering Dr. Lim Eng Cheang

I remember Dr EC Lim who was my doctor and family friend.  This tall, kind and soft spoken gentleman used to examine my throat, listen to my chest and gave me those "fearful" vaccinations in his clinic in Anderson Road.  I am very thankful to him for what I am today.  It is certainly very joyous to hear that his legacy continues with a huge donation from his Trust for the betterment of society.  This article below is taken from Ipoh Echo.
A five-storey rest and recreation centre for the aged will be built in Ipoh, on a piece of land behind YMCA Ipoh. The centre, costing RM2.5 million and named in memory of Dr and Mrs (Bebe) Lim Eng Cheang, will be funded by the Estate of Aunty Bebe, as she was affectionately called. There will be 28 units of one-bedroom suites with sizes ranging from 260 to 480 sq ft.
YMCA Rest and Recreation Lodge
The suites will have a lounge area, kitchenette, attached bathroom and individual balcony, in addition to the bedroom. Each suite can accommodate up to two persons.  Common areas of this retirement lodge will include a lounge on ground floor, day care centre and a sky lounge, which is open to the public for rent for social functions. It can accommodate some 100 people. The building, which will have an indoor garden, will be serviced by two elevators.
Construction work will start in September and is expected to complete in a year’s time. Once ready, the suites will be rented out on monthly basis. Although YMCA is a Christian-based non-profit organisation, the retirement lodge will also be open to non-Christians.
The idea to set up a retirement lodge was first mooted during a retreat of the Board of Directors, in 2011. It received tremendous support from the community and church leaders, who see a unique set of problems faced by the ageing population, where the number one malady is depression. This centre will serve as a refuge for those who need a place to rest and a platform to forge relationships with people whom they can relate to.
The launching of this retirement lodge and the piling ceremony were held on Tuesday, August 20, at YMCA Ipoh. Among the guests were the trustees of Aunty Bebe’s Estate, relatives and friends. Dato’ Ngeh Koo Ham, Member of Parliament for Beruas and Sitiawan state assemblyman, graced the occasion.  Ngeh called on associations and societies to do their part to meet the various needs of the community, “It’s more blessed to give than to receive,” he advised.  Joining in the memory of the late Dr Lim were representatives from Society of Caring Hands, Kiwanis Club of Ipoh and the Dementia Society Perak, all beneficiaries of Aunty Bebe’s estate.
Dr Lim Eng Cheang was amongst the first batch of post-war medical graduates from King Edward VII Medical College, Singapore. Lim and his wife, Bebe, believed in sharing their wealth with those in need.  Aunty Bebe had willed that a portion of her estate be donated to charities in loving memory of her husband, Dr Lim Eng Cheang. The trustees subsequently decided that the recipients of the bequests be named after both Dr and Mrs (Bebe) Lim Eng Cheang.  Though they are long gone, their spirit of love and generosity continues to live in the community.

Ipoh Lahat Road YMCA

This picture shows the original Lahat Road YMCA building.   It also shows members helping children in the early 1960s.  The Lahat Road YMCA will soon be operating at its new premise opposite the Perak Stadium.  Programmes will be announced shortly when the building is ready for occupation.
