A Wedding Reception @ Galasa Event Centre

Attended a very memorable wedding reception at Galasa Event Centre at Jalan Cadwell.

A lovely couple with very happy parents and smiling faces all around.  A great wedding ceremony and an excellent venue for the occasion.

And remember, never to forget a selfie with friends.

The main entrance. To the right is the main event hall.  On the left, a smaller pavilion with a fountain pool in front.

Ipoh is fast becoming a happening city!

Art and Photo Exhibition @ 22 Hale Street

Great artwork on display at 22 Hale Street Heritage Museum for the week.  Many water colour paintings are from members of the Urban Sketcher group.

There are also photos of birds and landscapes.

Very interesting photos are presented by the Karst group from the Kinta Valley.  The magnificent limestone caves and underground water canals are more remarkable.  These wonders of nature need to be preserved.  Most disturbing to hear that some mining companies are blasting the limestone hills nearby.

Ipoh Founded by Hakka Made Vibrant by Cantonese

This presentation is by Dr Richard Ng who is an Ipoh City Councilor.

There are several facts which I find very interesting:
  • Paloh Ku Miu was the Chinese Temple located near the Kinta River Jetty where the Chinese immigrants arrived.  The deity was brought from Penang to Ipoh by Leong Fee.  Leong Fee came to Malaya during the 1st wave of Chinese Migration.
  • The table on Chinese ethnicity in the late 1800's and early 1900's showed that the Cantonese outnumber the Hakkas in Ipoh.
  • The Hakkas were mainly tin miners whereas the Cantonese were mainly traders.
  • In the early days the Ipoh settlement was mainly located on one side of the Kinta River.  On the other side of the river the Chinese reared pigs.  The pig styes produced an overwhelming offensive stench for the settlement depending on the direction of blowing wind.  The British relocated the pig styes far away from the settlement and Yau Tet Shin bought up the land to build houses.  This was the beginning of the New Town of Ipoh across the other side of the Kinta River.
  • The Cantonese Trail has many interesting heritage sites. Very importantly it also included many business sites in the City.  These sites will be of great interest to the people of Guangzhou who are also Cantonese.  They will be willing to explore Ipoh to find out why their clansmen migrated to this place in the early days.
The presentation is rather long but I am sure it will be worth your time going through the whole presentation.

Urban Farming and Community Gardening

This upcoming talk will be very interesting.  Dr Richard Ng is an Ipoh Town Council member.  He will be talking on Urban Farming and Community Gardening in Ipoh.  He is trying very hard to push through these 2 projects for Ipoh City folks.  Imagine planting, harvesting and eating your own vegetables and fruits.  Come and join in the discussion on how to apply for land, how to grow vegetables and fruit trees, etc.  Dr Richard is very passionate on this project.

Health Awareness Symposium

YB Dr Lee Boon Chye launched the event on alcohol and smoking related health problems.  He mentioned lung injury caused by vaping.  A new term has been coined; EVALI - E-cigarette and Vaping Associated Lung Injury.  Vitamin E acetate found in THC containing vape products has been identified as the possible culprit causing severe lung injury resulting in death.

Buntung Polyclinic has a good Quit Smoking service.  Counseling and Nicotine Replacement Products are available for smokers, so is Champix which is an oral medication for smoking cessation.  They also have an exhaled CO detection device to find out whether smokers are compliant with the anti-smoking cessation programme.

Suffolk House ID Meeting

We had an infectious disease meeting at Suffolk House, Penang on 23rd August 2014.  Had the opportunity to drive on the new Penang Bridge for the first time.  Splendid views from the bridge because I could drive very slowly.  There were very few cars on the bridge.

Suffolk House was built on a vast pepper estate owned by Captain Francis Light (1740-1794), the founder of the Prince of Wales Island (Penang).  He lived there with the woman he loved, Martina Rozells of mixed Portuguese and Siamese descent.

Suffolk House was restored in 2007 and is the winner of an Award of Distinction in the UNESCO Asia Pacific Heritage Awards for Culture Heritage Conservation.  It is one of the finest Anglo-Indian mansion outside India.

Food was good at the restaurant.

I could imagine Captain Francis Light enjoying the view from the balcony.

Concept of Patient Centred Medical Home (PCMH)

The medical home is best described as a model or philosophy of primary care that is patient-centered, comprehensive, team-based, coordinated, accessible, and focused on quality and safety.

Features of the Medical Home
  • Patient-centered: A partnership among practitioners, patients, and their families ensures that decisions respect patients’ wants, needs, and preferences, and that patients have the education and support they need to make decisions and participate in their own care.

  • Comprehensive: A team of care providers is wholly accountable for a patient’s physical and mental health care needs, including prevention and wellness, acute care, and chronic care.

  • Coordinated: Care is organized across all elements of the broader health care system, including specialty care, hospitals, home health care, community services and supports.

  • Accessible: Patients are able to access services with shorter waiting times, "after hours" care, 24/7 electronic or telephone access, and strong communication through health IT innovations.

  • Committed to quality and safety: Clinicians and staff enhance quality improvement to ensure that patients and families make informed decisions about their health.

The Gopeng Museum

Visited the Gopeng Museum last Saturday 21st September 2013.  The old double storey shop house was located rather easily.  If you are coming from Ipoh along Gopeng Road, just take the turning to the left before the police station and then another left turn to reach the main road in town where the museum is located.

The operators of the museum have put in a lot of effort into preserving the heritage of Gopeng town.  However, the museum should be more focused on the story it is trying to tell rather than placing all the unrelated exhibits under the same roof.  My sincere congratulations to the directors of the museum.

MCMC Connected Healthcare Workshop

The Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission conducted the workshop at KLCC on 24th August 2013.  Our Prime Minister opened the exhibition.  There were 8 winners of the BEE (Broadband Empowered Entrepreneur) awards worth RM 5,000.00 each.

Back from the workshop at Ipoh Railway Station.  Notice the new dancing fountain.

Two products caught my attention at the exhibition.
1. Telehealth for all at www.u2Doc.com .  This portal allows anyone in the world to participate in a medical consultation with a doctor.  A patient can make an appointment, pay the fees and have a telemedicine consultation.  Project just started 2 months ago.  There are also gadgets for monitoring:  BP, weight, peak flow, blood glucose, ECG, pulse oximetry.
2.  Metria is a wearable sensor which can record sleep pattern, physical activity (number of steps, METs, calories burnt).  The device is to be worn for a week.  Data is downloaded to a computer via a micro USB connection.  This device is suitable for lifestyle management, heatlh and wellness assessment, weight management and fitness.
